Vite che si affollano intorno a un muro alto nove metri, storie raccolte per strada o nella povertà accogliente di piccole case. Nelle lunghe attese davanti al check-point si intrecciano racconti e si prova a sorridere ancora. A Betlemme, in questo luogo di frontiera tormentato dal conflitto, sono in tanti a credere e operare per la pace. Valentina Lanzilli e Luigi Ottani hanno raccolto alcune di queste esperienze di impegno, visitando orfanotrofi come la Creche e l’Hogar Niño Dios e ospedali come il Caritas Baby Hospital, dove da decenni preti, suore, dottori e infermieri spendono vita e talenti per alleviare le sofferenze di una terra che si chiama “santa” ma porta spesso i suoi nati a domandarsi “perché proprio qui?”.
«Sembra allora che la storia si ripeta. Per chi è nato a Betlemme, ieri come oggi, la meta pare essere il calvario. Ma è un Golgota in attesa dell’alleluja, cantato per la certezza del sepolcro vuoto. Quell’alleluja che spesso il personale del Caritas Baby Hospital canta perché le cullette rimangono vuote, dopo il ritorno a casa dei piccoli ospiti. Come è successo alla piccola Amani, che grazie a quel trasferimento nell’ospedale di Gerusalemme ha ritrovato la vita. Lei, che è tornata al Caritas Baby Hospital con una scatola di cioccolatini destinata al dottor George, ci fa ancora pensare che, per chi è nato a Betlemme, ci sarà sempre la speranza della resurrezione».

Among the people crowding around a nine meter high wall a great variety of stories are told, coming from the streets or from little homes. During the interminable hours spent in front of the check-point, many different tales meet and people still try to smile. In Bethlehem, a borderland haunted by war, there are many people still believing in peace and working for it. The Authors collected several testimonies of this hard work; they visited orphanages such as the La Créche and the Hogar Niño Dios, and hospitals like the Caritas Baby Hospital where priests, sisters, doctors and nurses have been spending their lives and talents in order to relieve pain and sufferings. This land is still called “Holy Land”, even though those who are born here often ask themselves “why just here?” .
«It seems, then, that history is repeating itself. For those who are born in Bethlehem it seems that the final destination is the Calvary. It is a Golgotha before the Hallelujah sung for the truth of the empty tomb. Very often, the personnel of the Caritas Baby Hospital sing a Hallelujah because the little cradles and incubators get empty after their little guests go back to their homes, as it happened to the young Amani, one of the protagonists of this book. She was given back her life when she was moved to a hospital in Jerusalem. Afterwards, she came back to the Caritas Baby Hospital with a box of chocolates for Dr. George, and she helps us to think that, eventually, there will always be a hope of resurrection for those who are born in Bethlehem».
